What to do when your skin flares up from a new skin care product…

Stay calm! Let me help you get your skin clear again!

If you’re anything like me and like to try new skin care products that you see on sale at Target or tending on tik tok then you probably have had a few breakouts or flare ups. Yea.. I’ve been there and probably like you, I freaked out!! What should I do?? Should I cleanse and do my regular skin care routine? Should I add salicylic acid treatment or blemish control treatment? Do I go buy some random product that popped up on my google search that treats skin flare ups?

Sounds kinda like you? Then keep reading.

I will say this time and time again, keep your skin care routine SIMPLE. Cleanser, treatment (if needed) and moisturizer, THAT’S IT. Although trying new products is super fun, don’t use them if you actually don’t need them to avoid situations like this. Now your face is burning, red and wait are those hives or pimples??! 🙃😂 lol. So now that we’re here, what should you actually do when you are having a reaction of some sort to a new beauty product?

First and foremost, rinse your face with cold water. Don’t cleanse or put any additional products on your skin. Let it breathe for the rest of the day. Rinse again at the end of the day if needed. Our bodies have the amazing ability to heal itself but we have to create the best environment to do so. Be sure to drink lots of water and avoid too much sugar, junk food and fast food and if you’re feeling fancy you can add biotin to your vitamin list. By the way, if you continue with this lifestyle your skin will be glowing daily! Before bed I suggest applying a light layer of Aquaphor healing ointment over the affected parts of your face.

The next morning if your skin has calmed down a bit then you can do your regular skin care routine but keep it super basic- gentle cleanser, maybe hyaluronic acid and your regular moisturizer. Avoid any harsh products like Niacinamide etc. and avoid sleeping on your sides if you can. (Use a clean silk pillowcase!) Be very gentle when applying your skin care products so as to not irritate your skin any more and go light with how much product you use as well. The goal here is to give your face a little reset.

If you wake up and your skin has not improved at all I suggest only washing with cold water and applying organic jojoba oil if you have it or the Aquaphor healing ointment (but go light as it will make your face look greasy!). Maybe rub an ice cube on your face for a minute or two as well. If you are able to (ask a doctor if necessary first), take a low dose of ibuprofen to help with any pain as well as inflammation. (Ibuprofen helps with inflammation.)

**However, If you have a pretty severe skin reaction to a product I definitely recommend calling a doctor or your local urgent care. I am a healthcare professional but I can not give you medical advice. If you’re having a serious allergic reaction you do not want to wait until it’s too late.

Certain situations your skin can flare up for a few days so be patient and gentle with your skin as it heals. Sometimes you develop a spot or bump on your face that can last a couple weeks. Or you can be one of the lucky ones and your skin clears up by the next day. It’s tempting to try different things to help your skin but ultimately the best thing you can do for your skin is allow it to do what it does naturally- recover and rejuvenate on its own.
